Show different pages to different participants

Use If for a yes/no decision and Switch for several possible routes. Put the decision after any answers or calculations it needs.

If: show a follow-up

Suppose a single-choice question asks “Do you own a bicycle?”

  1. Add If after that question's page.
  2. Set Condition source to Earlier answer.
  3. Select the bicycle question in Earlier answer, choose the comparison, and select its “Yes” option.
  4. Put the bicycle follow-up page in Then. Put alternative content in Else, or leave Else empty to skip the follow-up.
  5. In Preview, test both answers. After either branch, Flow continues below the If.

The available comparisons depend on the selected question or value. You can also choose a Flow variable, Declared URL parameter, Study design value, or Study field when your survey defines one.

If an earlier branch may skip the source question, configure If this participant never saw the question. An unanswered question and a question the participant never reached are different cases. A warning that an answer can never exist means the decision is too early or the source is on an unreachable route.

For answers inside a Loop, the current iteration is selected when it is available. Outside that Loop, choose the specific iteration you want to inspect.

Switch: choose one of several routes

Use Switch when the same value selects between several cases. Each Case holds the content for one matching value; Flow continues below the Switch afterward.

For example, declare a URL parameter named language, then use it as the Switch source. Add cases for en and de and put the corresponding pages inside them. Test each supplied value and a value that matches no case; do not assume a case will always match.

For a randomized study variable, choose Study design value, then select the Variable. The Switch creates one branch per level automatically. For a “Message” variable with “Plain” and “Friendly” levels, place the respective message page in each branch. Edit the variable's levels in Study design to update those branches.

Use Set variable to build a score before testing it, and Study design to define assigned conditions.
